Why Water Safety Matters More Than Simply Learning to Swim

By Sarah Taylor, Founder of Tiny Swimming

Why Is Water Safety Important for Children?

Water safety is one of the most important life skills a child can learn.

While swimming lessons help children build confidence and develop swimming ability, water safety teaches them how to recognise risks, make safe decisions and respond in an emergency.

Over the past few weeks, there have been several heartbreaking incidents reported across the UK involving children and young people in and around water. These tragedies are a powerful reminder that confidence in the water does not always mean safety in the water.

According to the Royal Life Saving Society UK, accidental drowning remains one of the leading causes of accidental death among children and young people in the UK.

At Tiny Swimming, we believe every child should learn both swimming skills and water safety skills together. That is why water safety is woven into every lesson we teach, from our youngest Baby Turtles through to our Learn to Swim programme.

“As a parent and swim school owner, I don’t measure success by how quickly a child swims a length. I measure success by whether they have the skills, confidence and judgement to stay safe around water for the rest of their lives.”

Swimming Ability Does Not Equal Water Safety

One of the biggest misconceptions around swimming is that once a child can swim, they are safe. Unfortunately, this simply isn’t true. Many water-related accidents involve people who could swim.

Why?

Because water safety is about much more than swimming technique. It is about understanding risk, recognising danger and knowing what to do when something unexpected happens.

A child may swim confidently in a warm, familiar swimming pool, but that does not automatically prepare them for:

  • Cold water shock

  • Open water environments

  • Strong currents

  • Deep or murky water

  • Slippery edges

  • Panic situations

  • Unexpected falls into water

  • Swimming while fully clothed

  • The pressure of trying to help someone else in difficulty

These situations require knowledge, awareness and practice—not just swimming ability.

What Water Safety Actually Means

Water safety is the ability to recognise hazards, make safe decisions around water, understand personal limitations and know how to respond if something goes wrong.

It includes skills such as:

  • Floating and staying calm

  • Returning to safety independently

  • Understanding open water risks

  • Recognising unsafe situations

  • Knowing when and how to ask for help

  • Following safety instructions

  • Respecting different water environments

These are life skills that every child should learn alongside swimming ability.

Why We Teach Water Safety in Every Lesson

At Tiny Swimming, water safety is not something we teach once a year.

It is part of every lesson.

From babies learning how to return safely to an adult, to older swimmers practising how to reach the side independently, every stage of our programme includes important safety skills.

Baby & Preschool Lessons

Throughout our lessons, children develop essential life skills, including:

  • Safe entries and exits

  • Returning to the poolside independently

  • Floating and recovery skills

  • Turning around and finding safety

  • Understanding pool rules

  • Recognising hazards

  • Listening and responding to instructions

  • Building confidence without becoming overconfident

These skills are introduced gradually and revisited regularly so that they become second nature.

Confidence Can Be a Double-Edged Sword

As swimming teachers and parents ourselves, we know how important confidence is. Confidence helps children explore, learn and enjoy the water. However, confidence without understanding can sometimes create risk. A child who feels confident in the water may be more likely to underestimate danger or overestimate their own abilities. This is why our approach focuses on building competence alongside confidence. We want children to love the water, enjoy swimming and feel proud of their achievements. But we also want them to understand that every water environment is different and deserves respect.

Five Simple Water Safety Habits Every Parent Can Teach

Water safety doesn't start and end at swimming lessons. Parents and carers play a vital role in helping children develop safe habits around water.

Here are five simple messages you can begin reinforcing today:

  1. Stop and Think Before Entering Water - Encourage children to pause and assess their surroundings before getting into any body of water.

  2. Always Swim With an Adult Nearby - Children should understand that water activities should always be supervised by a responsible adult.

  3. Never Run Around Pools - Wet surfaces can be slippery and dangerous. Walking around pools should become a lifelong habit.

  4. Learn How to Float and Stay Calm - Remaining calm can be one of the most important safety skills if a child unexpectedly finds themselves in difficulty.

  5. Ask Permission Before Entering Water - Whether it's a pool, lake, river or beach, children should always check with an adult before entering.

Small habits like these can make a significant difference over time.

Simple conversations about water safety, active supervision and reinforcing key safety messages can make a huge difference.

Together, we can help children develop a healthy respect for water while continuing to enjoy all the wonderful opportunities it brings.

A Final Thought

Every time we hear about a water-related tragedy, it reminds us why water safety matters so much.

These incidents are not just headlines.

They are families whose lives have changed forever.

That is why at Tiny Swimming, water safety isn’t an extra lesson.

It isn’t a box to tick.

It isn’t something we save for the summer.

It is part of every lesson, every week, because learning to swim is important—but learning to stay safe around water is essential.
